User Feedback

I recieved an E-Mail from KEF's acoustic Engineer regarding my speaker design. I asked if he would be able to give his opinion on the design and how i could improve it. The main point of change that he highlighted was that the ports on the side of the speaker to allow air in are way to big than they should be . He said that where they are to big the sound produced will be of less quality as there is a large gap for sound to 'leak' which is resulting in low bass output. This is the biggest modification that i will have to make to my design so far as KEF products base themselves on superior sound quality and for my product be part of KEF's range it will have to meet this specification.

KEF Acoustic Engineer - Allan Skellett

I took my design to an audio shop in the local town centreto ask the owner what he thought of my design. I decided to ask him as he deals with different types of audio loudspeakers and has done so for a long time so knows his stuff when it comes to speakers. I asked him a few questions about the design and the functionality of the speaker i had made and here's what he had to say.

Q1 - What are your first initial thoughts of the speaker?

At first looks this is a very nice speaker that is completely different to anything that we sell here or that i have seen working in this industry for over 20 years. The way the speaker looks is very unique and stands out to a customer as it isnt a bland box shape like most speakers we sell. I particulalry like the curves that are in the design not only the arch shape but also the anle from the side and the way it gets narrower in the missle then widens up again. I can tell that it isnt a cheap speaker as it uses a nice wood finish that i have only seen in expensive speakers. I also like the fact that it looks simple to use with just 3 buttons  for the power and volume this is very different to most speakers of this size that ihave seen and also makes it appealing.

Q2 - How Does the sound quality compare to other speakers you sell?

Now im not going to lie this speaker hasnt got the best quality sound around and this is  a major disadvantage and possibly a problem when it comes to selling this speaker. here at my shop we are audio specialists and our customers coming for high and very good sound quality and im afraid if a customer was to ask about your speaker i would have to say that the sound is not of good quality. Its clear that you have  used basic speaker drivers which is understandable. Having said that though i would have to say this is one of the best looking speakers i have seen around but just lacks heavily in sound quality.

Q3 - What improvements do i need to make for this to sell well?

I wouldnt say that there is that many improvements tha tyou would have to make to the speaker as it looks pretty good as it is. However, i would say that you need to redesign the look of the ports. Having a box on the back of the speaker not only makes it look ugly but it makes the speaker hard to place as it cant got up against a wall flush. I would also say that you will have to deffinetky include a bluryooth capability into the speaker as this is the modern and sought after technology in speakers today. Not having this will hinder the selling capability of the speaker.

Q4 - How would you rate the portability of the speaker?

This speaker is actually unique as i am able to carry it by the arch. The ay that you have designed this means t§hat the arch you have created can serve as a handle as it is just the right size to get my hand around. The weight also makes it easy to move around as it isnt to heavy and the weight is also evenly distributed across the holding point meaning when i lift it it doesnt lean to one side. I would say that i am limited to where i can take it as it needs a mains source of power so pherhaps a battery may improve this??

Q5 - Finally Would you buy this speaker?

Yes i would buy this speaker, it looks very nice and satands out to other items that are currently sold. the sound isnt amazing but it works and does a alright job when playing music. My only worry if i brought this would be that there is no bluetooth capability, But i would deffinetly buy this speaker.
